This is not a surf movie, it is a story about surfing’s deepest roots. Told in eleven chapters, A Deeper Shade of Blue combines innovative underwater cinematography techniques with a unique narrative structure, to uncover the art of surfing and the spirit of Aloha like never before. Adding emotion to the imagery, the film is coupled with a soundtrack featuring Paul McCartney & Youth, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and many others.

The event begins with a very special welcome from the red carpet premiere in Hawaii with music by Kaukahi featuring Jack Johnson. Following the presentation of A Deeper Shade of Blue, Director Jack McCoy will be joined by world-renowned surfing legends as they discuss the evolution, the culture and the impact of surfing from its beginnings to today’s billion-dollar-a-year global industry. Panelists include surfing movie star Gidget and legendary surfing sensations Jamie O’Brien, The Marshall Brothers, Derek Hynd, Marty Paradisis, Terry Chung, Jordy Smith, Tom Wegener and others.* And shortly after the panel discussion, we have a video collaboration from Sir Paul McCartney and Director Jack McCoy.

The Gracetown Grommets is a popular and historical junior surfing event held in an idyllic location. It is held in memory of the nine lives lost in the Gracetown Tragedy.

In its 16th year the event is presented by the Margaret River Boardriders Club alongside Cowaramup Boardriders Club. We invite you to join us for this memorable junior surfing event for kids aged 16 years and younger.

The event is designed to provide an opportunity for junior boardriders club members to compete at an amateur level against rival boardriders clubs members and statewide competitors.

Jack McCoy releases his 25th film ‘A Deeper Shade of Blue’.

In collaboration with Brand West, world-renowned surfing videographer Jack McCoy has released his 25th surf film ‘A Deeper Shade of Blue’ and claims it will be the last surfing film of his career.

Moving from Hawaii to Australia in 1970 McCoy has created a string of iconic surfing films (mostly with Dick Hoole): Tubular Swells, Bunyip Dreaming, The Green Iguana, Blue Horizon and the amusingly named Occy the Occumentary, about Mark Occhilupo.

His latest creation combines innovative cinematography techniques with a unique narrative structure. McCoy’s approach to the film is reminiscent of Sir David Attenborough with an environmentalist view of conservation and preservation of the ocean environment.

The film uncovers and encapsulates the history and culture of surfing. Not a ‘surf movie’ but a film about the art’s deepest roots, it tells the story of surfing as Hawaii’s greatest gift to the world.

Designed to inspire and educate surfers and non-surfers alike, the film is told in eleven entwined chapters featuring some of today’s best watermen and women such as Jordy Smith, Jamie O’Brien and Stephanie Gilmore.

Featuring all types of surf craft the film highlights Derek Hynd surfing a finless surfboard at Jeffry’s Bay in South Africa and Hawaiian Terry Chung displaying incredible poise on a foil board, where he literally rides on air, the board lifted above the wave on a hydrofoil.

McCoy discovers and pioneers the use of a high-powered underwater scooter. He travels along behind waves underwater at speeds of up to 10 knots per hour with his HD camera mounted to the scooter allowing him to follow surfers on waves and capture footage.

Narrated in an educational tone in some parts McCoy shares a heartfelt message to the people to look after the environment for the benefit of the next generation, which is embodied by supporting sponsor Brand West.

Featuring in mainstream cinemas McCoy states the film was created to be seen on the big screen with slow motion montages and never before seen footage.
